The Purr-fact Companions: Cats and Their Impact on Our Lives

There are many benefits to being owned by a cat. Cats have been our loyal companions for thousands of years, captivating us with their mysterious charm and playful antics. Whether you’re a seasoned cat owner or considering adopting one, understanding the unique qualities of these feline friends can enrich your life in countless ways.
A big thank you to Brandi DeAngelo, a Catnip Casa Volunteer, for the writing and research for this article. We hope you enjoy it and learn new fun facts about cats!
Short-Term Benefits of Cat Ownership
Owning a cat can bring immense joy and companionship. Their playful nature and affectionate behavior can entertain kids and adults alike. Cats are known for their ability to reduce stress and anxiety, providing a calming presence in our lives. Studies have shown that spending time with cats can lower blood pressure and improve overall mental health.
Cats are also low-maintenance pets compared to dogs, making them ideal for busy individuals or those living in smaller spaces. Their independent nature means they don’t require constant attention, but they still offer plenty of love and enjoyment.
Long-Term Benefits of Cat Ownership

Beyond the immediate benefits, cats offer long-term benefits that can positively affect your life. Their presence can help create a sense of routine and responsibility, which is especially beneficial for children. Allowing kids to help care for a pet fosters empathy, patience, and a sense of responsibility, and cats are popular first pets.
Cats also provide emotional support and companionship throughout their lives. As they age, they become even more affectionate and reliant on their owners, creating a deep bond that lasts many years. This long-term companionship can be incredibly rewarding and comforting for the cat and their special person. Catnip Casa Refuge works hard to provide individual attention for our special needs and senior kitties in a loving, home-style environment (check out our current residents here).
Health Benefits of Having a Cat
Cats contribute to our physical health in various ways. Their purring has therapeutic effects, promotes healing, and reduces pain. Petting a cat releases endorphins, which can elevate mood and increase a sense of well-being.
Cats can help keep our homes free of pests too. Their natural hunting instincts make them excellent at catching mice and other small rodents, providing a natural form of pest control!
Cats and Our Community

Cats also play a role in community engagement and socialization. Events for cat people, such as cat conventions, cat shows, and fundraising events, provide opportunities for cat lovers to come together, share stories, and build connections. These gatherings can foster a sense of community and belonging, making it easier for people to meet new friends and form lasting relationships.
Celebrating 10 Years of Catnip Casa
As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Catnip Casa in September 2025, we reflect on the impact Catnip Casa has had on the lives of needy cats and their owners. Over the past decade, we’ve rescued, rehabilitated, provided respite care, and given lifetime care to many senior and special needs cats in the home-style environment they deserve during their ninth life.
Catnip Casa Cat Refuge provides care for cats that require extensive rehab or lifelong pawspice care due to age, disease, or disabilities that don’t allow them to live in a normal home because of medical needs or behavioral challenges.

We also support TNR (trap, neuter, return) with training, education, and equipment.
Here’s looking forward to a wonderful 2025!
